Zainab [7-yrs]
Zainab, from a complex polygamous and impoverished family, was brought to a Shokofa home , where she now thrives academically and artistically in a private school in Kabul.
In 2021, the Taliban’s return to power plunged Afghanistan into a dark and oppressive era, defined by a misogynistic regime that stripped women and girls of their most basic rights. From banning girls’ education to forbidding simple freedoms such as visiting parks, going to gyms, standing on balconies, or even speaking in public, the Taliban relentlessly worked to erase the freedoms and futures of Afghan women. With minimal action from the international community, despair deepened, leaving many Afghans feeling hopeless and fearing a grim future for their daughters and the very soul of their nation.
Shokofa, a non-profit organization dedicated to girls’ education since 2004, quickly recognized that while providing education within its hidden sanctuaries served as a crucial lifeline, it was no longer enough to secure a brighter future. In response, Shokofa redefined its mission: to move these girls from its orphanages in Afghanistan to safer environments abroad, where they could access education, freedom, and the fundamental rights they deserve.
Today, many young Afghan girls live in Shokofa’s homes abroad, enrolled in private schools and participating in additional educational programs such as online English classes, music, arts, and crafts. As Shokofa continues its mission to help Afghan girls flourish, it stands as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit—a powerful reminder that even in the face of severe oppression, hope and determination can pave the way for a brighter future.
Your contribution, whether a one-time gift or a recurring donation, will directly fund the girls’ home operating costs and their educational programs, ensuring these essential initiatives continue.
